This case study relates to a 1960's house on which we carried out a level 2 survey. There were a number of holes which had been formed in the brickwork up to 70mm in diameter and which have now been made good.
Initially it was difficult to establish why these holes had been formed – they were certainly significantly bigger than those which are formed when cavity wall insulation is installed. On further discussion with the occupier it was established that they were there to help facilitate investigation of the cavities and an infestation by rats!
As part of the remedial measures, rat traps were installed in the inspection chambers to prevent rats entering the internal drains.
